That closure followed an earlier, distinct retrenchment: TechCrunch's report from 22 February 2022 said the company laid off 111 employees and abandoned the goal of making its system ready to carry passengers, redirecting toward cargo only. The December 2023 report adds that Dubai's DP World, which had taken majority control and dropped the Virgin name in that 2022 pivot, would retain the hyperloop intellectual property, while the company's remaining hard assets, including a test track outside Las Vegas, would be sold off separately.

What the documents establish

Together, the two reports document two separate corporate decisions rather than one continuous decline: a 2022 strategic narrowing from passenger transport to cargo, under new majority ownership, and a 2023 full wind-down of the entity itself. Neither article is a company filing, since Hyperloop One was privately held; both rely on reporting, with the 2023 piece explicitly attributing its closure date to Bloomberg News rather than to a company statement TechCrunch had independently verified. That distinction matters for anyone citing a precise shutdown date: it traces to a named news organization's sourcing, not to a hyperloop-industry filing or an on-the-record company announcement.

The operating read

Editorially, the more instructive fact than the closure itself is the sequence: the passenger-transport ambition was abandoned nearly two years before the company disappeared entirely, once a new controlling shareholder redirected the business toward a narrower, more commercial use case. That the narrower cargo-only version still did not survive suggests the original technical and regulatory hurdles to passenger hyperloop service were not the only constraint; a capital-intensive infrastructure category can also outlast the patience of a change in ownership.

• Did the company change strategy or ownership before it closed, and does that intermediate step change what the closure demonstrates?
• Is the closure date sourced to a company statement, or to a news organization's own reporting that the company has not confirmed on the record?
• Are other companies pursuing the same underlying technology under different assumptions about cost, regulation or use case?

A cargo-only pivot in 2022 and a full closure in 2023 are two distinct, separately documented events, and reading them as a single story risks losing the two-year gap in which a new owner tried, and still failed, to make a narrower version of the business work.
