37signals' own book is a method, not a proof

The record

In 2006, the software company 37signals published “Getting Real” as a free online book describing its own approach to building web applications without outside investment. The text remains hosted today at basecamp.com/gettingreal, presented as “the smarter, faster, easier way to build a successful web application,” organized into chapters titled, among others, “Fund Yourself,” “Hire Less and Hire Later” and “Build Less.” An earlier promotional page for the book, preserved in a web archive snapshot from December 2008, states that 37signals used “the unconventional Getting Real process to launch five successful web-based applications… in just two years with no funding, no debt, and only 7 people,” and that the paid PDF edition had sold “over 30,000 copies” by that date.

What the documents establish

Both versions of the page are the publisher's own description of its own book and company, not an independently audited account. The “no funding, no debt, and only 7 people” claim and the “over 30,000 copies” figure are self-reported by 37signals about itself; no third-party filing or audit is cited on either page, and none was required, since 37signals was privately held. What is independently verifiable is only that the document exists, has been continuously hosted since at least 2006, and states the same substantive method, namely a small team, self-funding, and rapid iteration, across both the 2008 snapshot and the current live page. As a living document, its description here reflects the page as retrieved on 16 September 2026, not a claim that its text is unchanged since 2006.

The operating read

Treating “Getting Real” as evidence that bootstrapping works for a given founder's product is a category error the document itself does not commit: 37signals describes its own process, not a controlled comparison against funded competitors, and other entries in this library document companies whose bootstrapped or lean approaches ended differently. What the document is useful for is procedural rather than evidentiary: it is a detailed, dated record of one company's stated decision rules, such as fixed time and budget with flexible scope, that a founder can compare against their own plan, not a study proving those rules produce a given outcome. This is an editorial distinction; the book itself makes recommendations, not efficacy claims.

What to check before you decide

Before adopting a recommendation from “Getting Real” or a similar founder-authored method document, check the following.

• Is a specific outcome, such as launching five products in two years, being cited as the author's own claim, or presented as independently verified?
• Does the recommendation depend on a team size, funding structure, or market condition that differs materially from the reader's own situation?
• Has the live document changed since any earlier citation, given that it is maintained as a living page rather than a fixed, dated filing?

“Getting Real” is a genuine, continuously published method document from a real company. It is a self-reported account of that company's own process, not third-party evidence that the method generalizes.
