The EIC Accelerator keeps its grant and equity paths separate

The Commission's 2026 EIC Work Programme treats grant-only, blended-finance and equity-only awards as separate tracks, not one bundle.

The record

The European Innovation Council Accelerator operates under the European Commission's Horizon Europe framework and states, on its own programme page, three distinct forms of support: a grant component below €2.5 million for innovation activities, an investment component of €1 to €10 million managed through the EIC Fund, and a combination the page calls “blended finance: a grant component & direct equity or quasi-equity such as convertible loans.” The EIC Work Programme 2026, the Commission document C(2026) 4080 that governs this year's calls, confirms applicants select among “Grant-Only, Blended finance, Equity-Only” when applying, and states the grant is a one-time lump sum “to be provided only once during the implementation period of the Horizon Europe programme (2021-2027).”

What the documents establish

The programme page is the Commission's own public-facing summary; the Work Programme is the governing document behind it, and the two agree closely, which is itself worth noting since summaries sometimes blur distinctions a work programme states precisely. The Work Programme establishes a detail the summary page only implies: an applicant requesting a grant component prepares a grant agreement directly with the Agency, while an applicant with an equity component must separately agree to share company and financial data with the EIC Fund, and “a single award decision” covering both grant and investment is adopted only after that separate step. The Work Programme's own footnotes state United Kingdom applicants may access the full programme except the EIC Fund's investment component, for award procedures from 2024 onward, a jurisdiction-specific condition neither a general Horizon Europe description nor the summary page would capture.

The operating read

A founder outside the EU reading that the EIC Accelerator offers “up to €10 million of equity investments” should not assume every accelerated grant carries that option: the Work Programme's own text conditions the equity path on a separate agreement, a separate Fund assessment, and, for some Member States funding Seals of Excellence through transferred regional funds, a restriction to “grant only” support “even if” the applicant was evaluated for blended finance. This is editorial: an applicant should treat the three-step process, short proposal, full proposal, jury interview, described on the programme page as the gate for the grant decision specifically, with the equity decision running on its own track behind it.

What to check before you decide

Before assuming a specific funding mix from the EIC Accelerator, check the following against the current Work Programme:

  • Does the applicant's country of establishment carry any Work Programme footnote restricting the investment component, as the United Kingdom's does?
  • Has the applicant selected, and been evaluated for, grant-only, blended-finance or equity-only support specifically, since these are separate application tracks?
  • Is the funding a Member State transfers to the Seal of Excellence restricted to grant funding only, which would override an earlier blended-finance evaluation?
